Not sure if anyone has ever had this error? We have recently migrated several of our printers from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 Print Server (64-Bit) R2. Several people have reported errors when printing in that the print job doesn't print out quite right. The print job is spooled from the machine to the print server and then down to the printer, the printer then prints out on a single page only 'PCL XL error' and fails to print the rest of the pages regardless of the print job size.
The printers in question are very old, looking on HP's support site I can see that a universal driver is provided for both it looks like.However we are reluctant to install it on the print server in question and would prefer something more specific. Does anyone know of any standalone specific drivers for these printers that would run on Server 2008 R2 64 Bit?
Any help or support would be appreciated! Or is it the end of the road finally for these aged printers?

Is the PCL XL error page all that is printed, or does this happen after printing some of the pages of the print job?
If the same document is reprinted, is the error always the same, or is a different error generated, or perhaps none at all?
Give full details of error(s) as printed.

For some time, it has been HP's policy (and that of other manufacturers) to support printers via Universal Printer Drivers - only the latest printers usually have full function discrete drivers, and then only until the range is superceded.

Thanks for your input, i have provided some additional info below:
The PCL XL Error is all that is printed on a single page for each print job. Even if the same document is reprinted by the same user the error is exactly the same, nothing changes.
I am not surpised that for something of this age that HP doesn't provide full function discrete drivers. The print server is currently using a driver that has been pulled through windows update and is the suggested/recommended driver.
The full error is 'PCL EX error subsystem kernel error illegal operator sequence. operator end session position 4104

In the meantime, as the error is repeatable, you could reprint it but use the 'print to file' option in the Print dialogue.
Analysis of the captured .prn file may yield a clue (but may not).

As DepotINTL indicates, if you use a PCL5 (or PostScript) driver, then you won't get PCL XL errors, since PCL XL is the underlying name of the Page Description Language associated with PCL6.
HP appears to offer drivers, for the LaserJet 4100 and LaserJet 4050, for all three PDLs, for Windows Server 2008 R2, although they are are all Universal Printer Driver versions.
But in switching to a different PDL you may, of course, avoid one error only (perhaps) to find different problems with your output.
