HP 8740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

PRINTER QUE fails to clear frequently.

happens printing from web, acrobat reader, lotus word pro, open office.

It does not happen all the time...which is frustrating.

happens using usb and wireless

I have tested using all the above. No item fails each time.

I have used the doctor, follwed the steps outlined on hp site, including a complete removal, restart and re install.

had an 8720, this problem did not occur. upgraded to 40 for extra tray and scanning ability.

Hello, @RODGERNB – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for engaging in the HP Forums! I see by your post that you are experiencing printer related issues. I will certainly do my best to help you!

Going through your post, it looks like an issue with the print spooler. Follow the steps below to clear the print spooler:

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.

If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL65824/bi-158439-1/OJ8740__Basicx64_1912.exe to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂

SAdly, I had already tried all of these things...the problem presists, at random...though I note more frequently on lotus word and certain pdf items.

I had a 8720, no issues. the 8740 is having these issues. I have uninstalled and re installed 3 times.

It even happened on an open office document...

further suggestions welcome. While doctor clears the que, most annoying and time wasting.

I don't suppose a Clear que app is available? someting on the desktop, click and que is cleared. That at least would be a time saver. 🙂

Hello, @RODGERNB

I would like to know the following details:

1) Is the print spooler started and is "Automatic"? If not please change the same.

2) Is there any specific application which creates this issue? Try printing from different applications and let me know which particular application causes this issue.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you!

Cheers 🙂

PDFS seem to cause a que jam, but not all.

lotus word and sometimes approach, but not always.

open office, but again not always.

This is the frustration. Like an intermittent car electrical problem, this is irritating.
