I don't scan all that often, but I know for sure I had no problems scanning into pdf format using the Solution Center as of late March. Then something happened between then and last week, and 2 of my printers are now removed from my laptop. I've spent 8 hours today uninstalling, reinstalling, Restore, Undo Restore trying to get my C309a to be able to scan again. I even tried installing from the original disk but got a code error 2732.
According to the software and drivers page https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-photosmart-premium-fax-all-in-one-printer-series...
I now only have 2 download options. The above 140_408.5 exe file and Scan Doctor 5.0. Scan Doctor recognizes a file is missing and tells me I need to download firmware, which no longer exists.
I can't install the Solution Center because it's missing the 'status.msi' file from the 408.5exe download and worse yet, the Windows Installer dialogue box won't go the F$%# away because it's still looking for this missing file!
I am mad as hell, as I just bought a brand new Envy 360 in Nov and have had nothing but problems with this printer because of Win10.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance. I promise I won't take out my frustrations toward HP out on you :).
If HP no longer wants to support a product, fine. We have to just suck it up, but at least give us a download version that has all its pieces. Ugh.

I suggest trying HP Scan Extended instead, it will be installed under Start > All Apps > HP and will probably bne the most simple solution:
If you would like to repair the original HP Scan software you may try following these steps:
Click the Start button and type %temp% into the search bar, then open the shown Temp folder.
Open the latest HP installation folder which begins with 7z (e.g. 7zs1234), if no Setup folder exists try the previously edited folder
Open the Setup folder.
Open the status folder
Right click on statu.msi (a Windows installer package) and select Repair, if an error returns it is not installed, right click it and select Install instead
Follow the steps on screen and reboot if required, then check for any change.
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos thumb up in the post.
If my post resolve your problem please mark it as an Accepted Solution 🙂

Hi, Shlomi. Thank you so much for your reply! 🙂
I tried the HP Scan Extended first, since you said that might be the easiest. I received a “Scanner communication cannot be established” error, despite the printer being connected via USB and the printer recognizing the connection when I attempt to print a document.
I then went to the Temp folder, and I have 13 7z folders…all from May 15…the day I tried most recently to reinstall the C309a.
I’m not sure, though, that attempting to repair from one of these folders is going to work, since I downloaded a fresh file from the site on 5/15…? Meaning the original file is corrupt thus it won’t be in the file to repair it??
Nonetheless, I tried to follow your instructions anyway… 🙂
I did locate a Setup folder in the Temp folder, went to the Status folder, but there is no ‘status.msi’ file. It has 23 ‘Status1025,’ ‘Status1028,’ etc and ends with ‘Status2052’ and one very large Cabinet file simply named ‘status.’ The only ones that don’t skip around sequentially are 1029 through 1038, if that matters. I suspect that ‘status’ was originally intended to be ‘status.msi’ so I right clicked it but there is no repair option (because it’s a Cabinet file).
I did a right click on the ‘status’ Windows Installer Package to repair it, and I got the same error I get when I try to use Solution Center: “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable,” and I’m given a Browse option that defaults to 7zS1770, which does not exist in the list of 13 7z folders I have.
Incidentally, I did a search on the C drive for “status.msi” both on the 15th and today, and there is no such file except for the old status file from the installation disk that gets the 2732 error when I attempt to install. I guess I forgot to mention that the other day in my frustration. 🙂 Sorry.
If you have any other suggestions, I am open to them. Thanks again 🙂 ❤️
