My Photosmart 5510 has a carriage jam that doesn't respond to the troubleshooting steps.  It makes a terrible jack hammer sound when the power is turned on.  The problem started after I tried to print on some heavy weight paper.  It didn't print and I removed the paper.  It wasn't torn at all, so there are no bits of paper remaining in the machine.  The print cartridge is all the way to the right and will only move a half inch to the left.  Can my printer be saved?

The printer can make loud noises if the carriage cannot move freely. Refer the document in the link below:

Under Solution three, follow the steps to 'check carriage path for obstructions'. Check for and remove any loose paper or objects that might be restricting the movement of carriage left and right.

Note: Use a flashlight to illuminate the area.

If that does not help follow the steps to ensure 'posts in the cartridge parking area are not blocking the carriage' and 'cartridges are not touching the printer cover'.

Hope this helps.

I have tried all the troubleshooting tips that I can.  Because the cartridge won't move from the right position, I can't check the posts.  Any other suggestions?

Let's try the following steps to clear the carriage jam. With the printer powered on, open the cartridge access door.

1) Try and slide the carriage to the left. Apply gentle force.

2) If that does not work, gently press down on the carriage and try sliding it to the left.

If you are able to move the carriage to center, turn off the printer.

Check and remove any jammed paper or foriegn object in the parking area of cartridges. Also, follow the steps in the previous message to check for the posts.

Power on the printer and check the functionality.

If that does not help, do the following: (If you have not tried already)

1) With the printer powered on, disconnect the powercord from the back of the printer.

2) Wait for 30 seconds and then connect the power cord back in.

3) If the printer does not power on automatically, press the power button to turn it on.

Check functionality.

How do I check the posts if the carriage won't move from the far right position?

I tried all your suggestions with no success.

I appreciate all your help.

Since the issue persists, the printer will require service. If the printer is under warranty, please contact HP support for assistance:

Thanks.  As easy as unplugging and then plugging back in.  Now I do not need to purchase a new printer at this time.  Thanks you.

Does someone want to tell me why the gosh **bleep** links in every single one of HPs Borum thread do not work?
