I thought HP had a reasonable reputation, so I was dumb enough to buy two of these 6600's. Like others I found mine would print with less than a full complement of cartridges but no longer. One has quit because it has lost its print head and after powering down/up, resetting and print head cleaning it refuses to do anything and is now locked into the message print head missing. The MANUAL I downloaded states that it will offer you the chance to continue printing even if more than one cartridge is missing. The statement issued by the HP employee earlier in this thread is garbage, but probably supported by HP reprogramming the cartridges to force replacement. My second printer has now reported that two cartridges are empty but the black has just been replaced. The idiot at HP that states the printer has to use color to print black is just that. It might be possible that the printer uses some to stop ink from drying out when color printing is not used but that does not stop it from printing in black only. My printers spend half their time in print head cleaning which I have always understood is very heavy on ink. I will go back to my 10 old Cannon that is still chugging on and definitely prints in black when the color is out. Neither does it take forever in cleaning maintenance. The printer screen should come up with a message advising you to go make a cup of coffee so that it can finish what it is doing. Having said that it does state it will take several minutes. As for the 10 year old Cannon, the head clean takes a very short time and happens infrequently, the print quality is very good, the cartridges expensive but last what seems like a lot longer. If you are reading this it’s probably too late you have already purchased the lemon. Will I ever buy another HP product, not on your life! It appears that you can neither email nor chat with them on printer problems!  It’s time to call waste disposal, they are after all 18 months old!
