Any luck with this? I'm starting to experience this same problem with an old printer but very little used one.

My solution was to oil the rail that the printheads travel back and forth on. Use a light oil (3in1 like ) on a powderless glove that has been washed clean first and rub up and down the rail say every 3-6 mos. When my printheads stalled, they were parked on the left side and had jumped the rail. I lifted the printheads up and put them back on the rail.Everything has been fine since. Don't know why others were so confounded by this problem. With a dry, I think a lot of pressure had to be applied to get them to move and when they did, they jumped the rail. Good luck!

Hi @georgewa,

Thanks for visiting the HP community.  A good day to you. I came across your post where you require assistance regarding carriage jam issues with the printer. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Splendid effort and commendable description of the issue. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

🙂

  • Did this happen after a power outage or power surge?
  • Did you bypass power strips and connect the printer directly to the wall outlet?

Please try all the prescribed steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-photosmart-pro-b9180-printer-series/1143049/model/1143050/do...  for carriage jam related issues.

  • Step one: Reset the printer
  • Step two: Inspect for any obstructions
  • Step three: Print a test page
  • Step four: Service the printer

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please.

If the problem continues, then the printer has a hardware issue and needs to be replaced by contacting HP phone support.
