I have Officejet Pro 8610, a couple of years old but only prints a page or two once a month. Today I got a "Printer Failure" message in middle of printing. Online trouble shooting told me to turn power on/off, remove cables etc which I did but no result. Then, was advised to install a new firmware update which accomodates non-HP cartridges. I downloaded but it will not install because "device is in error", and I should resolve the error before installing update. But the update is maybe the solution! How do I get round this?

Hi! @TWH1, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you are getting printer failure error while printing using the printer.\

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Please try the steps recommended below.

To reset the printing mechanism, unplug the printer, wait, and then plug the printer in again.
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
   NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂
