HP Officejet 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP8610 was working fine until I needed to reload Windows 10 64bit.

I have a wireless connection to the internet and Wi-fi to the printer, however the problem still occurs when connected via USB. Printing is fine, but the  following error appears in HP desktop Assistant when trying to scan: "scanner communication cannot be established"

I opened HP Print & Scan Doctor 5.0, ran diagnostic tests - The "scan driver check" error appears with options to restart the PC  and printer, this did not resolve the problem. I restarted the test, and this time I skipped after "skan driver check" error. The yellow signal appeared here and further assessment processes continued with green symbols throughout.

I then  uninstalled the HP software, downloaded the latest version and re-installed. Still no joy.

Please assist

@JaydeeM,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you get an error message "scanner communication cannot be established" while trying to scan using the USB cable.

This issue could occur if you are not using HP Scan and Capture App to scan when connected by USB.

Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Using the HP Scan and Capture App (Windows 8 and 10)

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Hi Rainbow23

Thanks for your reply. Just for clarification: I have been using HP Printer Assistant desktop software since I bought the printer a while ago. This worked well on various PC's with different versions of Windows, including mine with Windows 10 64. Also I was able to scan and print on USB and wireless connection alike. After I was forced to reload Windows 10, it seems only the scan driver on my dell PC is missing. I can print but not scan whether connected via USB or wireless connection.

I have downloaded HP Scan & Capture, but the same problem occurs. Error message "problem communicating with device"

I look frward to hearing from you

I understand that the issue still persists after downloading HP Scan & Capture application.

This issue could occur if the full feature software is corrupted.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the links to uninstall and reinstall the drivers:

Step 1: Uninstall the Drivers:

Please follow the steps provided to uninstall the printer software in the link: Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

Also, please follow the steps provided below to completely remove the printer software from printer properties.

Steps to remove printer driver files from Print Server Properties:

  1. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing one of the following:
    • Click the Start menu and in the search field type 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click it in the search list.
    • Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.
    • From the Start menu or the Start screen:
    • Open Devices and Printers.
    • Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window.
    • Click on the Drivers tab.
  2. Select the printer driver you wish to uninstall.
  3. Click the Remove button.
  4. Select "Remove driver and driver package" and click OK.

Step 2: Download and install the Drivers from the link: Full Feature Software and Drivers
