What does Auto Answer mean ?

Fax installation on my HP6500A Plus complete and I can send faxes. I'm having a little trouble with incoming phone calls on the same line with the telephone attached to the Ext on the printer.   Mostly it works but once or twice I could not  hear the caller and they only heard what I think are the incoming fax noise.

Has it anything to do with the Auto Answer or Wait for 2 Rings setting ?

Re: What does Auto Answer mean ?

You understood the answer. I would set it to 4-5 rings. Just don't forget it. Smiley Happy

Re: What does Auto Answer mean ?

Yes it does. Turn off AutoAnswer and you will be able to answer all incoming calls. If you run a business you might want to consider installing a dedicated FAX line. That is generally a business standard practice.

Re: What does Auto Answer mean ?

Thanks. I used to have a separate fax line while I was working but now that I have retired it is not worthwhile paying another thirty dollars a month for a second line. I receive very few faxes now but occasionally it is very important to be able to send one and possibly get a reply, which is why I bought a machine with fax capabilities.

If I understand your answer correctly the auto response only kicks in after 2 rings.  If I therefore set it to 4 or 5 rings then if I answer the phone before then, there is no problem and if I don't or if I'm out, a fax will still be received, otherwise the caller gets no answer.
