I found this on the web and was able to connect my HP laserjet 1000 to my win7 64-bit laptop.

installed PDF Creator (sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator) on my XP box instead and set it up as a network printer (so it would download a variety of drivers for 95, 98, xp, vista, Windows 7, etc).

Then I configured PDF Creator to auto-save to a specific folder (using timedate as default name). Then I told it to print after the save to the LJ1000 hooked to it via USB.

Next I set the new PDF Creator printer as a sharable printer.

Next, on my Windows 7 I created a new network printer and selected the PDF Creator.

Now, whenever I print I just select the PDF Creator printer and voila! The document is printed on the LJ1000 just like old times.

beth_g,

Can you please be more specific about this latest way to use PDF Creator to set up a win7 64-bit system connected directly to the Laserjet 1000 via USB?

Can this work with the XP box out of the picture after it's all set up?

I have a real estate office full of HP equipment and I am very disappointed that half of our in house printers at the agents desk no longer work because we bought new systems and there is no driver update for the HP1000.  HP updated the MP5 printers for years past their life span and yet nothing for the HP1000.

The reason I bought HP equipment was because of their driver updates and work horse equipment.  The Brothers are much cheaper.  I will not spend the extra money on an HP again.

I resolved this problem recently.

Host the HP Laserjet 1000 on a 32-bit machine like WinXP.  Assign this as your print server on your home network.  The printer will be attached to this old machine via USB.

Your Windows 7 machine will be somewhere on the network.  The printer will NOT be physically attached to the Windows 7 machine.

Install the host based drivers on the WinXP machine. You can download these drivers from the HP support page.  Modify the DOS printer and change the port to USB.

On the Win 7 64 bit machine, install a new printer as a LOCAL PRINTER (although it is not attched to the Win 7 machine).

Create a new port. Local port type. For the port name use \\PrintServerName\PrinterShareName.

Click on the Windows update button next to update the drivers.

Choose HP Laserjet 1100 MS as the driver for the Win 7 machine.

Save with whatever name and do a test print.

There is no need to use PDF Creator or konica drivers.  You just have to trick the machine and use older HP drivers.

That is hardly a solution.  Dedicating an XP machine as a print server would be no better than going to buy a new (non HP!) printer.

I've read just about all there is on these solutions and it appears that there is no way to get the HP Laserjet 1000 working directly plugged into a windows 7 64-bit machine.  Even the Linux HPLIP drivers don't work on the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 11.10.

It has been ages since I first posted on this problem with the LJ 1000 since my LJ 1000 died over 9 months ago.  I found the perfect inexpensive but very reliable replacement:  Samsung ML-2851ND.

My son-in-law buys these by the boatload and uses them for his clients who are third-party motor vehicle service providers.  They are fast, reliable, and true work horses.  He should know since he would need to service them if they didn't work  - his clients would be after him all the time.

I got mine from NewEgg when they had a special for $99 with free shipping.  My son bought a similar Samsung model at Fry's Electronics for even less than that a few months after I got mine.  They are black and white only, have a lower profile than the HP LJ 1000, and toner is readily available and relatively inexpensive on the Internet. This printer will work with any 32 bit or 64 bit operating system - all the drivers are there.

My personal experience is that this is a great printer that has been available for quite a while but is usually under the radar from published printer purchase recommendations.

I can appreciate the frustration of all who are still looking for a solution with the LJ 1000 that will work for them, but I would suggest, that in the meantime, that you also keep your eyes and ears open for a good deal on the Samsung printer.  And if your find a good deal on one, snatch it up.  You will eventually need it.

Remember that your LJ 1000 won't last forever.  Good Luck!!

if anyone would like to get more info on the Samsung printer mentioned above, here is a link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=28-112-085&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&Pur...

Please note that of all the one star reviews only 3 are from 2011, and of the 2 star reviews only one is from 2011.  So it looks like Samsung has cleaned the bugs it might have had.

The method described in my post of November 11 is still working.  Haven´t had to do anything more to it.

By the way, in a different line, our experience in XP is that when the USB connector of the LJ1000 is disconected from the PC it should be connected back again in the same port.  If we connect it to other port we keep getting error messages that "the printer is not connected".

Apparently HP has created a driver. I have the HP Deskjet 1000 installed on a windows xp machine and am printing from a networked windows 7 machine. I installed the driver from the link below.  I installed the windows 7 version.  It gave me a choice of two drivers.  i used the HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers.  When installing I only selected the drivers and the help.  I am printing fine across my network. Hope it works for you.

sam0000002,

Sorry to disillusion you, but the driver is for an inkjet printer, not the laserjet printer being discussed here. Congrats on getting your inkjet to work with Win7!

I know that this is an old post and thanks to those that have found work arounds for the situation but, I have a problem that is holding me up.

I was able to get to the point of sending the print job from my Win7 64bit machine and have it show up as a print job in the XP machine. Problem is though, it trhows up an error in the XP What's printing window.

The port on the XP machine is the USB virtual port and the two machines are obvioulsy connectingbut that is where it stops. I selected another port on the XP unit but the print job doesn't arrive when sent.

Any thoughts on what I might change / check on?

Thanks in advance
