Totally non-intuitive...but it worked great!  Thanks!

Printer was working fine with DATA Products cartridges then all of a sudden would not print in color with a notification of incompatible cartridges. Purchased new HP cartridges and could not print photos with a notation that I only had a black ink cartridge and needed a tri color cartridge which I had installed. I ran a little test by attaching a photo to an Email and addressed it to myself. When I recieved it I had the printer make me a color copy and it did so without a problem indicating the cartridges were just fine. The problem still persists when attempting to print down loaded pictures. HP updates my computer software on a weekly basis and the difficulty occured following an update. Where do I go from here?

I found it, I found it

At least on my XP...all the other solutions are good for one page, then you're back to square one.

Try this.  pull up a singe page that you could print, and click 'print'.  Then click 'preferences', and on the chart, find and click 'factory settings'.  Too simple to work?  I worked just fine on mine.

I am not having this same experience.  If I buy HP Black Inc #74 my printer works great.

I did have this experience and found that the solution suggested at the very beginning of this thread worked beautifully.  Make sure you press the color buttons in the correct order.
