drivers for windows 8

I have need for a printer driver for a HP Deskjet 6540.  I recently had to upgrade to a new laptop and o/s because of motherboard failure in an obsolete machine and now need to get both a deskjet 6540 and an older scanjet 5470c working.  This is for a standalone machine without internet access, therefore, I have to have downloadable products that I can put on a thumbdrive and use on the standalone machine. This is for a nonprofit organization that hope to not use scarce funds to upgrade the printer and scanner to newer products.

I can not find anything on the HP website that is downloadable and does not require internet access to run.  Just a basic driver for both items is all that I need.  Not something with all the "bells and whistles".

Re: drivers for windows 8

Hi Pchs,

It's no longer possible to download the drivers for these printers.

However, inside windows update there should be drivers, basic ones, that can be used for the simplst printing jobs.

I know you've said that it's a standalone machine without internet access so, basically, the answer is that if that is the case you're not really able to get the drivers, however, if you're somehow able to get the achines to an internat connection along with the printers you might be in luck.

I cannot however guarantee that it will work, but it's worth a try:

When you connect the USB cable to the printer and then to the computer, or Windows 8 detects that the printer is on the same network as the PC, Windows activates Windows Update. Windows Update searches online for the most recent in-OS printer driver on the Windows Update site. If the online driver is more recent than the driver stored in Windows, the computer downloads and installs the updated driver. The Windows Update process takes place automatically.

I hope the above, even though not the solution you were looking for, has helped you by providing you some info.

If you are not able to connect the specific computer to the internet, you may also manually download and install the Windows Update drivers from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

You will need to obtain the corrent drivers for your system architecture, then copy it, extract and install it by carefully following the steps below:

Although the steps above are intended for Windows 8, those applies to Windows 7 as well.

Hope that may help,
