Hello,

Have you seen the support doc for this issue for the OJ 8500 (click here)? Near the top is a section titled, "Preventing printhead error messages". Click on the blue box by that title to find brief instructions regarding a firmware upgrade that is meant to solve this. The remainder of the doc provides other solutions you can try, but I expect the upgrade will be most helpful. Please let me know how this works.

This doesn't work.  How do we fix the problem?

If one has followed the link provided by EricN and did the firmware update, the reset to the printer, and did the cleaning, one would need to then get a replacement printhead if one has not done so at this time. One can call into HP Total Care and they can assist with ordering the printhead. The number for US and Canada customers is 800-474-6836.

Perhaps if you describe what the printer is doing, it is easier to find a solution.

I got an error myself, but it's so non-specific, that I am looking under "the hood."

Yes - install the latest HP Printer firmware, this is good to do but will not solve the problem. First you need to lift up the HP printer hood and clean the print heads (they get dirty) with a cloth or Qtip - hit the * button for 5 seconds and the print heads will move all the way left, then unplug the printer, remove the print head and clean the contacts only then put back in place. This should FIX the problem - if not then order a new print head from HP, the cost is about $65.   Jeff.

Please don't suggest replacing the printheads!  I just put new printheads in at a cost of over $100.  I have the same error as the original poster (who also stated I believe that he had replaced the printheads, so I wonder why so many people told him to replace the printheads?)

Other suggestions please.  Thank you

I recently replaced both printheads on my 8500 909G.  Now every time I power on I get a "problem with the B/Y Printhead" error message.  Removing and re-installing the B/Y Printhead did not help.  I tried putting in the old mostly depleted B/Y Printhead and everything was fine (except the original print quality problem of course).  I then removed the old printhead and re-inserted the new one and voila! No error message.  It did a printhead cleaning and then I was fine... until the next time I powered off for some reason and I had to go thru the same process again, putting in the old one, cycling to "ready" and then pulling it and re-inserting the new one again.  How do I get around this problem?  It does not seem like there is a consistent problem with the new printhead.
