HP Envy 5549
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I just recently purchased the HP Envy 5549, and after about 15 tries, I cannot scan a picture without it looking absolutely terrible. I even tried comparing a photo I had already scanned with a previous scanner at the same DPI and everything, and the old one looks fine but the new just looks smeared or something. Almost as if the photo is completely out of focus, but the old scan proves it's not the photo.

What could be going on here and how can I fix it?

All of their suggestions seem to be for printer/scanners that have been around in someone's house for a while as they mostly suggest cleaning. Mine is brand new. It is not dusty or dirty or have paper residue on it.

Brand new?  OK, pack it up and take it back for replacement.
