I did this successfully:
- Download the Vista driver (19MB)
- Unzip it to a folder
- Connect the printer and turn it on
- Goto Setting
- Goto Control Panel\Hardware and Sound
- Click on: Advanced Printer Setup
- Click on: Stop
- Click on: The printer that I want isn’t listed
- Click on: add a local printer…
- Go for: Use an exiting port
- Choose: USB001(Virtual printer…
- Click: Next and choose have disk
- Browse for: the downloaded driver .inf file

Above links are not at all useful. HP has no concerns over older but most reliable products and this will definitely affect brand image of the company. HP should rethink their strategy....

Messed for a couple of hours trying to get my trusty HP Laserjet 1010 to print from a new computer with Windows 8.1. I tested the Vista driver idea above with no apparent success. But when I twigged that I needed to run the install CD software with the printer directly connected to the computer via USB cord (rather than via network) everything went swimmingly. Now I'm connecting to the printer via my router as usual and everything seems fine. Mind you, I needed to run the CD software twice before it installed properly. Oh well, at least everything's working - I think!

One must select " The desired printer is not listed" then "local printer", then "Dot4_001". You have to select the update via Windows 8, then you are able to select hp laserjet 1015, voila. I had to unselect Dot4_001 afterwords, then to select usb001 and then again to select Dot4_001, so that it worked finally.
