printer tells me colour cartridge is in the wrong slot

HP Recommended
HP Photosmart C4180
Microsoft Windows XP

i have just tried to print on my printer after having used it for several years.  new cartridges were bought a few months ago and installed correctly.

however the printer is asking me to check the colour cartridge - and suggesting it's in the wrong slot.  which it isn't.

i have removed the cartridge several times and checked it [you can't actually get the cartridge in the wrong slot] and replaced it after inspection.

i have turned the printer off and on again; i have disconnected the printer and connected it again but it still tells me to check the colour cartridge.

there is nothing wrong with the cartridge and nothing i can do will convince the printer that it's the same cartridge in the same slot as it was last time i used it!

help please!!!

Hi @Lupatria,

Good Day.  Thank you for stopping by the HP forums. I understand that you are facing issues with a message that the wrong color cartridge is installed. I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂

Great description and splendid diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you with it. I take it as a privilege to share this.

For better clarity, I would require more information regarding this to assist you?

  • Did you perform a hard reset on the printer?
  • Did you try with the old color cartridge and check if you get the error?

For a start please try these steps.

  • Please perform a hard reset on the printer.
  • Then try with the old color cartridge and check if you get the same error.
  • Please try check if the packing material on the cartridge has been removed.
  • Also please click here for further assistance regarding incompatible cartridges and follow all the prescribed steps.
  • If it still does not fix the issue, try with a different color cartridge and then contact HP phone support to get the printer replaced.

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
