printers and scanners

When attempting to scan a document on my HP Photosmart C4580, once I open the scanner it "warms up" with an "overview scan" but then quickly shuts down after so I am not able to actually scan anything.  Everytime I attempt to re open the scanner it repeats this process, each time quickly closing the scanning function so I can not actually scan a document.

I have rebooted everything.  Everything is connected fine and all of my software is up to date.  Please help.
