Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an  HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer and it is not working correctly. I read that sometimes the printer stays connected and sometimes not. Not to worry, I'll do my best to help you.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Is the printer connected via USB or wirelessly?
  • Do you receive an error message? If yes, then what is it?
  • Have you restarted the printer and checked if it helps?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Please reset the printing system in Mac.
  • Post the reset of the printing system, please check if it prints or not. If not then add the printer as explaind below:
  • From System Preferences, click on Print & Scan.
  • Click the Plus sign.
  • Select the listed Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One (This printer's drivers should work).
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
  • Select the Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One from the list.
  • Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.

NOTE: If the printer is connected to a network then add it as a air print printer.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂
