Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer won't print, and the status queue on the computer states "attention required." However, the printer does not have an error message.

I have run the troubleshooter, which stated there are no errors found. I have printed the wireless status report, which also states there are no errors.

When I try to print, I get a message on my laptop hat says "[printer] has a problem that requires user intervention;" however, it does not state what the problem is, and the printer does not have an error message. It simply looks as though the document never got sent over.

As I was typing this message, the printer randomly started printing the document. I'm going ot leave the question here, however, because this problem has happened  afew times in the last couple of days. The only solution so far has been to restart the computer and the printer and try  again, but I don't think I should need to do this every time I need to print something.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Yours,

Mariana

Hi @mariana1982,

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I see from the post that you are getting an error message on your HP laptop. I'll try my best to help you with this.

I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE

If the issue persists, I would suggest you follow these steps:

☑️ Clear the Printer Spooler Files and Enable the Spooler Service to see if this will help.

1. Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type Services.msc .
2. Double-click Printer Spooler in the Services list.
3. Click on the Stop button and click OK.
4. Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type"%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers, then delete all files in this folder.
5. Go back to services by holding down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type Services.msc again.
6. Double-click Printer Spooler in the Services list.
7. Click on the Start button. In the Startup Type list, make sure that Automatic is selected and click OK.

Alternatively, please follow the steps listed in these document:

✔️ Print Jobs Stuck in Print Queue (Windows) - Click here

✔️ Printer is Offline (Windows) - Click here

☑️ If the issue still persists, let's try these steps here:

  • First, assign a manual IP to your printer by obtaining the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

☑️ Now we need to reinstall the printer. Try the steps blow:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP PSC printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now Click on this link (please choose the OS)  and then download and install the printer drivers.
  • In the connection window, choose “wireless” and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.

Let me know if that helps or if you need further assistance.

Cheers

I am having the exact same problem... attention required and unable to print or more accurately rare and sporatic printing from a Windows 10 PC. Printing from an Android phone works fine. I have unsuccessfully tried the troubleshooting steps. I cannot connect printer to network even though it sees the printer. I have manually input the exact subnet, but this does not work. I have confirmed the same network etc. but nothing is working. I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled making sure the drivers are up to date. What other oprions do I have?

I am having the same problem.  I find the solution wholly insufficient.  This is a software problem - somehow, the printer is not communicating with the computer that whatever problem has been fixed.  Therefore, HP needs to address this as a software bug.  These cumbersome steps will not prevent the problem from happening again.

I too am having the exact same problem.  HP needs to address this issue if it expects to retain its customers.

Same issue for pst 4 weeks - this looks like a new HP bug as a result of a software update

I had the same issue with my HP P2035n printer on the LAN.  The USB connection worked fine.    What I noticed was the auto detect feature of Windows 10 created a port called  WSD-xxxx for the printer and for whatever reason, it seemed to not work with the printer.  I resolved the "attention required" issue by removing the printer and  adding it manually through creating a TCP/IP port (static IP).  Hope this helps.

Same issue.  I do not see any replies since the first one, that obviously have not helped anyone subsequently.  Is there a fix or no?

HP Recommended

No, I have never received support from HP or the community that provides a fix for this. The prior post that offers a possible solution notes that the USB connection to the printer works. Mine does not. It does not work via hard connection USB nor a wireless connection. You would think HP  might offer some assistance. Shameful.

To the HP managers:

We see above, from allegedly an HP Support Agent, an utterly witless, useless, condescending, and distainful 'reply.'

How HP can claim to provide customer service when the only thing we get is slipshod and off-target cut-and-paste bullpucky, I'll never knw.  But, somehow, that's the standard.

I have -- as another commenter said -- gotten no help ever from those who've signed as an 'HP employee' and only a little bit from 'community members.'  The HP trouble-shooting software is troubling, as well.

Regards,

Walter Hawn
