I was recently having trouble with my printer since relcoating back to east coast so I decided I should try and reinstall the disk that came with the printer. Particular problems scanning and downloading photos from my nikon camera card- (camera plug attachment broke so can't download photos except with camera card). I use these photos for my fledgling business that I am trying to restart here. Its an older multifunction printer but always produced fine quality prints and faxes and scans.
As I was installing I noticed on the CD rom that it was only for Windows 98 Me, 2000. Never thought of this since I upgraded to XP after I purchased this printer. I don't recall changing to XP program for this printer, but yet seemed to work. I may have downloaded an update but it was probably 8-10 years ago. So when I tried to install this CD I received messagees warning against using this or it could damage your system! Maybe this why I've had so many issues with my dell dimmensions 4450 computer with XP since I was runnig this predated printer program?
OK, so now I'm trying to remove the old hp programs so I can download the correct driver. However in the controlls window/add and remove- after highlighting there is no remove or change button? Another window said it was already uninstalled. I have been fooling with this for days so I may have already uninstalled the old program but it still shows up in add and remove window list? Can I install new download regardless?
I have tried to download the hp psc 950 printer program several times but it doesn't seem to work. Do I need to shut off printer and disconnect the usb while downloading and then shutdown and restart computer and then reinstall download? This is most frustrating!
I'm unemployed and would prefer a free solution but maybe it would be easier to purchase a CD rom from HP and install from there? If so, where do I purchase this.... can't seem to find where on the HP site I can do this. Thanks for your help!

I would suggest disconnecting the printer's USB cable, then download the driver from HP here. After the installer has downloaded run it and do not connect the USB cable until instructed to by the installer.
Once the driver has been installed there is a critical update from HP here that should also be installed.
If you have issues the Print and Scan doctor download here may help resolve the issue.
