Can someone steer me on how to set up wireless direct?

1. Does the printer need a netork or modem for this or does it speak directly through bluetooth or something similar?

2. Is there a way to set up so only my computer and printer speak?  I have a dedicated ethernet line.

Hi dstack123,

The HP Wireless Printing Center has information on setting up wireless direct.  Here's a link.

Hope this helps,

If you own the Officejet Pro 8600, it looks like that printer does not support the HP wireless direct feature.

Go to Printing with HP Wireless Direct for more information on this tech and which printers support it.

Note that newer HP printers now feature a similar version of this connection type: Printing with Wi-Fi Direct

Hi dstack123,

You may check out the following detailed procedures with step-by-step and screen captured guides to setup the Wireless Connection (Communicate the print job between: PC/Mac - ROUTER - PRINTER):

If it's a PC:

HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Printers - Wireless Printer Setup (Windows)

If it's a Mac:

Alternatively, you may want to consider WIFI DIRECT (Wireless DIRECT), which is different from Wireless Connection mentioned above connection (Communicate the print job between: PC/Mac - PINTER ONLY, directly without a router needed)

WIFI DIRECT (Wireless DIRECT) simplify the connection steps, however, this connection may disrupt your access to internet when your PC/Mac is connected to your printer, exclusively.

Lastly, just in case your printer is having intermittent connection issues, or lost connection after some time, following suggestion may help you in the quick fix in restoration of the Wireless Connection (not WIFI DIRECT):
