- Printer is offline in Windows. How do I get it back online?
A printer shows offline in Windows when the printer is off, a connection is not available, or the printer driver is misconfigured. Here is a checklist of things you can do to get your printer up and running again.
✔️ Make sure the printer power is on and the power light is bright. If the power light is dim, press the power button to take the printer out of sleep mode.
✔️ If your printer is on a wireless connection, make sure the wireless light is on (blue) and not blinking. Some printers have a wireless icon in the control panel menu instead of a light.
✔️ Download and run a special version of HP's tool Print and Scan Doctor. This tool is free and can automatically fix many problems that cause printer offline.
✔️ Restart the printer and the computer.
- Power off the printer and wait a little while for the power light to turn off.
- If your printer is connected wirelessly, disconnect power from the router and then plug it back in. Wait until your network comes back online.
- If your printer is connected using a USB cable, unplug and reconnect the cable from the computer's USB port and the printer's port.
- Restart the computer. While the computer is restarting, turn on the printer.
- After the printer and computer (and router).
✔️ Search Windows for "printers" and open Printers & Scanners. Look through this list to see if there is already a printer with the same or similar name that is online. In some cases, Windows might have detected and automatically installed a driver, in addition to one you added. Try printing to the printer that is online.
✔️ If your printer is using a wireless connection, make sure the printer is connected to your network by printing a network configuration page. This page provides the status of the wireless connection and helpful tips if there is a problem.
- If your printer has a wireless button, press and hold the wireless button
and then press the info button
to print the report.
- If your printer has an interactive touch-screen menu on the control panel, navigate to the Reports menu and print the report.
- Download and install the software again from 123.hp.com.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

It is easy enough to get the printer back online, but takes valuable time. My Question is "WHY TO I HAVE TO DO THIS DAY AFTER DAY?" The printer stays online for a day or two, but then goes back offline. Why can't it be put back online through the Properties box? Why does it keep happening?

If you have Windows 10 and you are connecting to your printer over the network, check what type of port the driver is connecting via. Windows tends to use a WSD port for communication, however this port type is highly unreliable and often results in offline errors. The most reliable way to connect via network is to setup the driver to use a standard TCP/IP driver.

Every morning when I come in, since Sunday, 8/4/19, I have had problems printing, saying the printer is offline line. I have to shut my printer off and then turn it back on to get the problem to go away. We leave the printer on to receive faxes throughout the evening, if necessary from other companies. Is there any way to correct this from continually happening each and every day?

I have gone through your Post and would like to assist
I suggest you download and run the HP Print And Scan Doctor and check if that helps
Link: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe
Run PSDR v5.0.2
Once the PSDR detects the Printer, it will show up the IP address and Software Status.
Select the correct Printer and click on Next.
PSDR will check if the Printer is on the Network and communication between the PC and the Printer. Once the connection check is done, click on Fix Printing
Once PSDR goes through all checks and automatic fixes, click on Print a test page.
Regardless if PSDR printed the test page or not, click on “NO PRINT”
PSDR will then notify you that there is an update available, click on continue, and PSDR will apply the patch and ask for a reboot.
Post restart the PSDR will run automatically to check for more issue. If no issue found close PSDR.
Keep me posted how it goes
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the "Solution Accepted" on this Post and it will also help other community members with similar issue.

Der Printer ist immer wieder "offline" in Windows 10 - Die finale Lösung. (Printer goes offline very often - Here the final solution!!!)

In ENGLISH
The printer goes offline again and again, even though the printer has been properly integrated into the network (via LAN or W-LAN).
This problem affects not only HP printers, but also printers from other manufacturers. The cause of the problem is a poorly programmed WSD port (THANKS Microsoft), which should be avoided. Here is the solution that is final and works 100%.
- Assign a fixed IP address to the printer. To do this, go to the HP Device Toolbox and click Network. Under IPv4 configuration you can assign the IP address manually. Make sure that the address is in your HDCP area.
- Then go to "Windows-> Settings-> Devices-> Printers & Scanners". Select your printer and then click on "Manage".
- Go to the printer properties.
- In the dialog that appears, click on "Connections" and add a new connection.
- Now select the "Standard TCP / IP Port" as type and follow the dialog until you have to enter the IP address and the port name. Enter the printer's fixed IP address and a port name of your choice. You have previously defined the IP address in the device toolbox.
- After entering the information click on "continue" and the new connection is created. Now activate the connection by clicking the checkbox for your printer.
- That's it, from now on there are NO PROBLEMS with offline printers anymore. Is not that great?

The issue I do not understand is why the printer ALWAYS goes off line. And every single time the printer has to be restarted and the computer has to be restarted. Obviously, there is a failure in the equipment or operator. The computers rarely, if ever have to be restarted in order to be connected to wifi.

Michael_AC1 can you say if this will work in the instance where the printer is confirmed to be connected to network (and successfully printing from another laptop wirelessly) but a 2nd laptop is not able to detect the printer (despite manually entering a confirmed IP address, having gone through multiple power up/down, restarts, uninstall/reinstall, etc)? Does the TCP/IP port fix the wonky WSD port issue so that the laptop can recognize the printer?

Hello Lisalg,
we using the printer with many Desktop-PCs and Notebooks, and it works with "Standard TCP / IP Port" without problems. Sometimes (one time per mounth) I have to switch on my printer first, before I can print. Are you sure, that your fix IP-address for the printer is part of your DHCP area?

HP OfficeJet 6700 connected wirelessly: After installing new WiFi routers which use both the 5 GHz and 2.4GHz bands AND use a common name for both, the printer was either not seen by the computers on the network or was discovered and seen as "off line". After trying the above solutions multiple times, the support team from the WiFi providers discovered that the IP address being reported by the printer was from the old network. When I attempted to manually change the IP address to one acceptable to the new router, one of the first menu options was to allow a dynamic addressing (DHCP). Almost immediately, the printer found the network and assigned a proper IP address. Problem resolved.

I am LOOSING my mind! My printer goes OFFLINE after pretty much each page I print. I CAN'T keep re-starting modems after EVERY PAGE! Even unplugging and plugging the power back is a BIG PAIN THE THE ! I don't understand this conversation about ports, network etc. Yes I ran the HP Scan Doctor, who supposedly fixed everything but couldn't print a test page. I clicked on "find software" and it gives me an error page. HP 2655. I am NOT supposed to restart my printer after every page. Please explain your solution in SIMPLE terms like click here and there.

I have the problem that the printer says it is offline, but it only does that with one computer. With the other computer, it prints fine.
I've done most everything that is suggested on all of these posts about connectivity issues, including running the various troubleshooting and dr programs, I've changed the IP adress, manually added it, actually had an HP tech lead me through all kinds of things I can't even remember. But, after a couple days, it won't work and says the printer is off line. On one computer. Again, the other one works with no problem.
A couple other things: 1) This problem started when we upgraded our internet and changed routers. 2) my son showed me how to print something using my cell phone. The cell phone couldn't connect to the printer either (but somehow his phone does). I haven't played with my phone to figure it out.
Mainly, I just want to be able to print with my computer.

Here is my fix I am taking this piece of **bleep** printer back to Best buy and buy some other manufacturers product. It spent hours on with tech support from the moment I took it out of the box. Should have realized HP were crap the time my HP photosmart stopped working after I change the ink cartridge and the machine said it was not compatible. HP tech support sucks and their products **bleep** . With this print I tried to connect a HP Chromebook on the weekend because I work 70 hrs a week and was told that wireless printers and Chromebook are handled by cloud tech support and they dont work weekends. So basically a loyal HP customer is **bleep** and we can’t help you. HP is horrible

My printer just suddenly went offline. I've tried Scan/Print Doctor. I've turned everything off and on. No luck.
My wireless light is blue and shining. My Network Configuration Page says the printer is ready and the wireless is working. I've done everything listed by the Virtual Assistant. (My printer is 13 days beyond the warranty. I would trash it and get something new but I just spent a fortune on ink.)
What the heck do I do?

I have no way of evaluating the solution other than to say this is a very complex set of steps, more convoluted than most non-techies will be happy with. Who, after all, is the customer base for this product? This seems to be a problem experienced by more than one user -- HP should come up with a fix in the way of new firmware or software which obviates this. Never had this sort of problem with previous HP printers -- (I am a multi-year user.)

@Michael_AC1 I tried setting the port to the IP address and it still didn't work. When I set it up, I typed in the IP address on the screen after choosing Standard TCP/IP Port. On the next screen it told me it couldn't find the device. I tried using Generic Network Card under Standard device type AND setting up a custom one (didn't change any settings, just clicked Okay). Neither option worked. Now what?

I am so tired of this constant problem with my MFP 180nw. After spending 2 or 3 days trouble-shooting and tring the same solutions over and over, I finally get it to work, which lasts a few weeks, then the trouble starts again. I have uninstalled/reinstalled so many times I have lost count. I have tried reloading the printer drive, which has quit working. The scan doctor is useless. All it does is say the printer is offline and can't be fixed by that (useless) program. Today it says the issue is some port is not configured properly, even though nothing has been changed. How can I fix this problem and keep it fixed?
