If you're encountering an error indicating that your HP printer cannot connect to Web Services for Instant Ink, there are several steps and considerations to troubleshoot the problem effectively.

Reason for Error

  • Network connectivity issues, such as incorrect DNS settings or IP configuration, can prevent your printer from accessing Web Services.
  • Instant ink Server could be down
  • Your printer might be set up with a USB or Ethernet connection, which can interfere with Web Services connectivity.
  • Public or guest networks can restrict access to Web Services.

Detailed Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Restart Devices

    • Turn off your printer, disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables, and restart the printer, computer, and router to clear possible error conditions.

  2. Check Network Connection

    • Ensure your network is operational and the printer is connected properly:
      • For Wi-Fi, make sure the printer is connected to the correct SSID, ideally 2.4 GHz, or 5.0 GHz if supported.
      • Check if the network connection status is strong and stable.

  3. Use Static IP and DNS Settings

    • Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP address.

    • Set a static IP address on the printer:
      • Navigate to EWS > Network/Networking tab.
      • Enter a static IP address for the printer.

    • Configure DNS servers:
      • Often Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) can help improve connectivity.
      • Go to DNS settings and manually assign the DNS server addresses.

  4. Enable Web Services Again

    • Open the EWS and navigate to the Web Services tab. Click "Enable" or "Continue" to attempt to activate Web Services.

      • To enable Web Services on an HP printer, access the Web Services, Network Setup, or Wireless Settings menu on the printer's display panel, select "Enable" or "Set Up," and follow the prompts to accept terms and print an information page. Alternatively, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser, clicking the Web Services tab, and selecting Enable
  5. Update Printer Firmware

    • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date:
      • For network printers, you can often update directly from the control panel under Setup > Printer Maintenance.

  6. Check Proxy Settings

    • Update Web Services proxy settings in the EWS if your network uses a proxy server.

  7. Remove Network Restrictions

    • Verify that your router or ISP settings do not block the printer from accessing the web.
    • Allow the printer in any firewall settings if applicable.

If none of the above steps worked, this should do the trick:

  • A. Do NOT perform a factory reset.
  • B. Assist with a manual claim on the printer (use legacy steps: Click here to know how to use the printer claim code)
  • C. If still unable to print
    • i. Request to Initiate Unsubscribe on HP App
    • ii. Remove the printer from their HP App
    • iii. Undo the cancel (cancel the cancelation) of the subscription on HP App
    • iv. Re-associate the printer back with the subscription
    • v. Printing should resume now.
