Hi @Jim195668

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation—it's genuinely frustrating to face a configuration error like 0x80040003 on a new or recently set up HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e. This error typically points to a driver malfunction or communication breakdown between Windows and the printer.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery plan to restore functionality.

Step-by-Step Fix for Error 0x80040003

1.  Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

2. Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer Driver

Corrupted or mismatched drivers are a common cause of this error.

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer and select Remove device
  • Open Device Manager > Print queues, uninstall any remaining entries for the printer
  • Restart your PC
  • Download the latest full driver package from the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Driver Page
  • Install and reconnect the printer

3. Clear the Print Spooler

Residual jobs or spooler corruption can trigger configuration errors.

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc
  • Locate Print Spooler, right-click and choose Stop
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files
  • Return to Services and Start the Print Spooler again

4. Run Windows Printer Troubleshooter

This built-in tool can resolve driver and port conflicts.

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters
  • Select Printer > Run
  • Follow prompts and apply any suggested fixes

5. Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, compatibility patches are delivered through optional updates.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates
  • Install any pending updates under Driver Updates

Let’s get your OfficeJet Pro 9730e back to smooth, reliable operation.
