HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have a brand new HP Deskjet 4158e All-In-One printer, and just like so many other HP printers out there, whenever the printer sits unused for a while it enters some weird sleep state which it cannot wake from. While in this state, my computer says the printer is offline, and the HPSmart app says it is either "Unavailable" or "Offline" depending on where I look. On the HPSmart website it says the printer is "Disconnected from Internet", but it also says "Ready to Print".

There is a certain amount of time where I can still use the printer even after it has fallen asleep. The amount of time for it to go from "asleep" to "dead" appears to change, sometimes 6+ hours, other times only 2ish hours.

The printer's display screen is blank, the only sign it is even on is the dim light coming from the power button and the solid blue light by the wifi button. The only way to use the printer (which I am forced to do every single day) is to unplug the printer, wait a couple minutes, plug it back in, wait a few more minutes, good to go.

Info on my past failed attempts to fix the problem:

  • The HPSmart app is up to date.
  • The printer is well within the range of my router. While turned on, the wifi signal strength is at maximum.
  • I have the newest drivers/firmware installed.
  • I have tried a couple of button combos, (but I can't remember which). I think the power+cancel buttons as well as cancel+wifi buttons. These button combos do not cause anything to happen while the printer is 'asleep'
  • I have even tried unplugging my router, waiting multiple minutes, plugging it in again, waiting a few more minutes, and then connecting the printer and letting it configure itself
  • I even manually set the printers IP address to a level outside the range of the DHCP server as set on the router. (Apparently a very large number of people who had this problem fixed it by manually setting the IP address outside DHCP range).

One thing worth mentioning, is that after I had manually set the IP address, my computer is now *sometimes* able to see the printer while it is asleep. My computer shows it as "Idle" where it used to say "Offline". This doesn't really change anything though, because the printer still will not wake up, and the power button might as well be a sticker because it doesn't do anything.

Hi @RSDFGFGDS,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're facing a frustrating and recurring sleep/wake issue with your brand new HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One printer on macOS 12 Monterey, where the printer:

  • Enters a deep sleep and becomes unresponsive
  • Appears offline or unavailable in HP Smart and your Mac

You've done excellent diagnostic work already — now let’s walk you through the most effective HP-supported steps to address this sleep/deep sleep bug, common in e-series printers.

1. Disable Deep Sleep Mode (if available)

Some HP printers have a hidden setting to disable deep sleep:

  • Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
  • Go to Settings > Power Management or Advanced Settings.
  • Look for options like:
    • Sleep Timer
    • Auto-Off
    • Deep Sleep Mode
  • Set the sleep timer to a longer duration or disable deep sleep if possible.

If you don’t see these options, your model may not expose them.

2. Assign a Static IP (You’ve Done This – Good!)

This is one of the most effective steps. Since you’ve already done it, that’s a big plus. It helps prevent the printer from losing its network identity when waking up.

3. Use Bonjour or AirPrint (macOS Specific)

  • When adding the printer on macOS, make sure to select the Bonjour or AirPrint version of the printer.
  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer.
  • Choose the one that says “Bonjour” or “AirPrint” under “Kind”.

4. Update Firmware (Again, if not recently)

Even if you’ve done this before, check again:

5. Use HP Smart App on Mobile as a Wake-Up Tool

  • Open the HP Smart App on your phone.
  • Tap the printer icon to “wake” it before printing from your Mac.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Well, I went through every one of those options and unfortunately nothing worked.

  1. The Auto-Off option is disabled. I can see that the greyed out option that is visible says "After 2 hours". Which I thought was odd because yesterday I tried to time it, and my printer stayed in the 'idle' mode for about 1.5 hours before it became unresponsive. Also the Energy Save Mode is set to 5 minutes (probably irrelevant).
  2. Already had done this, but tried to change it again just to be sure. Didn't make any difference.
  3. My system settings said the printers "Kind: HP DeskJet 4100 series-AirPrint". Just to be sure I removed the printer and added it again choosing "Bonjour Multifunct" as its "kind". Didn't make any difference
  4. I downloaded the Firmware Update Version: 2424B/2424C/2424D, which should be the most recent one. The installing/updating process stopped pretty quickly giving me the message "Cannot update the device.    This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device."
  5. Got the app on my phone, but HPSmart app on phone works just the same as on my laptop. Whenever the printer enters it's dead-asleep mode it just says "Unavailable" next to the picture of the printer. Clicking on the printer just opens up a window about how to turn my printer on.

As a bonus I also found out about the "Diagnose & Fix" option in the HPSmart app and ran that. When completed it told me "Driver Check issue fixed". So apparently there was some issue, but regarding my issue... Didn't make any difference.

This printer is so new it's still under warranty, do I need to return it and get another? This seems like more of a software issue than hardware, but I really don't understand why so many other people have had this same issue, but they were able to fix it when I can't. Also I have a boatload of pictures/screenshots of all this, I could post them if you want. I just don't know how helpful they would be.
