I solved this problem on my own... I went to Costco and bought the 4 ink kit titled 564XP... only to find the Black ink didn’t fit and although all information says get the 564XP ink... i was supposed to get the other 564XP ink. I guess the rocket scientists down at HP thought to name 2 incompatible ink cartridges with the same name... but... make them not interchangeable. The one I needed was 564XP and doesn’t have the little icon of a camera next to the name... doesn’t make alotta' sense that the printer i am putting the ink in is a PHOTOSMART... and prints images from a camera. hummmm...

... well, i called HP and talked to a barely understandable indian or pakastani named Mark... hummmm?... Mark?... really? well, he first told me i shouldnt buy ink from small company like "cost company" and to make sure i get the correct ink for my printer.... he told me the number... 564 or 564XP... hummmm?...  i briefly thought about explaining to him what Costco was but then decided nahhh and hung up....

well, now to how the problem is solved... i took the ink back to costco and told them the issue... they gave me my money back and will send the ink back to HP as a credit... HP loses out on my money and the ink will be trash so they lose out there too. I ended up going to one of those little corner after market ink filling places... they gave me credit for my used cartridges and i spent 1/4 the price for more ink.

I have used the after market ink for a couple dozen printing jobs already and it works awesome... Be aware that when you first install the ink HP warns of COUNTERFIT ink... and says your warranty wont be honored... blah blah blah.

HP is either stupid to name the 2 cartridges the same... or they are outright trying to get people to buy the wrong ink and have them have to go out and buy the correct ink.... either way... they ARE NEVER going to get my money again.

PROBLEM SOLVED

I ordered through The Cartridge People in UK (actually Jersey, tax free) & realised this is the 2nd time I have done this! Last time I assumed I had made a mistake & after finding a correct cartidge at home, it has been some time since I ordered & yes, I ordered the same one!! But it is exactly the one that I am directed to for my HP Photosmart Plus B209a. The only black ink cartridge they do for it! On the side of the pack there is not even a part number - it just says REPLACEMENT SERIES Remanufactured Premium Cartidge. Replaces HP 364BKXL. I emailed The Cardtridge People to let them know this is too narrow & therefore won't fit. Their answer:

"I confirm the cartridges ordered and received are the correct ones for your printer.
HP have changed the shape of their XL cartridges so as to produce exactly the same size of cartridges that they will fill with a different quantity of ink to make them be either standard capacity or high capacity (XL).
Unfortunately, this is something we can't change as it is HP decision - however, it explains why the cartridges you had are slightly wider than the cartridges received recently from us.
Therefore, please don't hesitate to try them in your machine and you will see that they will fit perfectly in to the slot made for.
We've received this same query from other customers since HP have changed this cartridge and our advice has solved the problems straight away."

So, I risked removing the packaging & guess what..? It does not FIT!!!!! It doesn't snap in & just pops up.

I hope HP are viewing this forum as I am really annoyed & had to copy & paste report info t o forward to my business premises where I was able to print from my DELL printer!!!!!!!

What the heck am I supposed to do to get a cartridge that fits????!!!

There are a couple of possibilities.  First, you bought reman cartrdiges, not HP cartridges so it is anybody's guess as to what you got.

Second, make sure you have the black cartrdiges - not the photo cartridge.  The black cartridges are wider than the color cartridges and have a pentagon symbol.  If you got a cartrdige with a bowtie symbol you have a photo cartridge, which does not work in your printer. The page here may help.

I got caught up in the same snafu! Kept buying various 564 blacks thinking if was just me. After many tries (and $$$$) I finally  called tech support for the REAL black cartridge. Tech support gave me the ONLY product number to buy. Now I buy using the product number, not the numbers on the front of the box. Stil makes me angry. How wonderful had they included that info with my new printer!

Thanks for letting me know _ I feel like throwing away my nearly new printer as it is currenlty unuseable! Please would you be kind enough to share the information on the Product Reference that you have been given by HP?

Thanks

Not sure what you mean by "Product Reference." If HP gave me one I wouldn't have kept it.

I feel like a victim too having been sold the wrong 564XL black cartridge ($34) at a local retailer and opened it before I realised it was not going to fit. Once opened, you can't return it.  It's quite a rip-off for unsuspecting players.

I suggest you Contact HP and request a correct replacement.

The HP web page you recommended doesn't help. In fact it still illustrates the how-to-insert-printer-cartridges with the original broad black ink cartridge. The slimline black ink cartridge, said to have superceded the broader model, is configured differently on the underside - there's not a chance it could fit the slot.   I've spent all morning on the phone listening to HP options (they all refer you on to one or another 1300 number or back to  the 131047 number. The way it's looking right now this expensive HP photosmart plus printer of mine will have to be thrown out because without a black ink cartridge it's useless.

Which page are you refering to?  Have you verified that you have a Black cartrdige (with the Pentagon symbol) and not a Photo cartridge (with the bow tie symbol)?  The Photo cartridge is not used in the Photosmart B209a, you need a Black cartridge.  See this page for information.  If the cartridge you have is the same size as the color cartridges it is the Photo (wrong) cartridge.
