5740 photo paper tray, yep, a bit too narrow, if one puts a 4X6 blank in there by forcing it in,when you try to print,  the printer will show the photo tray is out of paper .  If you manually cut a very thin slice off of the margin so the the blank paper fits normally, it will print.  put the blank paper in glossy (print side) side down.

Thank you for the help with answering the real question with an actual solution.  I am opposed to buying 4x6 paper for my photo printer that supposedly prints on 4x6 paper only to trim off some of the paper because teh tray was manufactured too small.  HP should own up to teh issue and provide a replacement tray.  I guess I could return the printer - yet again until I find a tray that fits the paper or use a dremel tool and modify teh tray myself.  Ugh!

I will never buy an HP printer again.  No support for obvious design like the photo paper drawer too small for 4x6 paper and the replacement ink cartridges are more expensive than the printer.

I have a 5746, and seem to be having the same issue. Whenever I try to print from the photo tray, it tells me to load paper. I have put 1 sheet in there, I have filled it, and I've tried every amount of paper in between. It tells me to load paper. So I keep trying, and about every 10-15 tried I'm able to print ONE thing. So imagine my frustration when I have to print a few things.  The 4x6 paper in the photo tray is a VERY tight fit; in fact it bends a little when squishing it in there. Is this the problem? Is there a new tray I could get for it that actually fits correctly? I need this printer to work! Please advise!
