@webbigjon, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Officejet!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you’re consistently getting a USB error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 and have already tried multiple troubleshooting steps, it might be worth checking a few more things before deciding to replace it:

Try a Different USB Cable & Port:

  • Use a different USB cable to rule out a faulty connection.
  • Try a different USB port on your computer.

Check Device Manager (Windows):

  • Open Device Manager → Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for any yellow warning icons or unrecognized devices related to the printer.
  • Right-click and select Update Driver.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall the current drivers from Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
  • Download and install the latest drivers from the HP support website.

Try a Different Computer:

  • Connect the printer to another computer to check if the issue persists.
  • If it works, the issue might be with your computer, not the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Go to HP Support and check if a firmware update is available for your printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from power for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and restart.

Let me know how it goes!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
