HP Envy 7640 goes to sleep after 30 mins (I think) of no use.  Once asleep, printer won't wake up.  To wake up, I must disconnect/reconnect power cable to restart printer.  Not a new issue; has been present for some time.

Can the "auto sleep" feature be turned off?

Thanks in advance for suggestions and help.

Hi@Moved2AZ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Can you try using a TCP/IP port?

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Praveebv,

Thanks for your response.  Printer is connected to Mac, not Windows.  I went to System Preferences, printers & scanners.  I see printer name, location, Device name & driver version (2.0).

I clicked on "show printer web pate" & reviewed settings.

As result of what I found, printer auto shutoff is disabled if connected to wi-fi network or to computer.

Printer was cable connected to MacBook Pro.  I unplugged this cable.

Set to both IPv4 & IPv6.

I'll report results after a day.

Many thanks for your help.

Praveenbv,

Update:  printer not used for 3-4 hours.  Went into sleep mode.  Could not wake it up by sending print job or depressing on/off button.  Restarted printer by disconnecting/reconnecting power cable.

Printer is connected to local network.  Website advises if this is the case, sleep mode after 2 hours is disabled.  Printer goes to sleep after 2-3 hours of no use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
