LaserJet Pro M281

I have a LaserJet M281fdw.  It is connected wirelessly.  The screen had an "Update Ready" notice so I updated the printer.  After the update, it continuously reboots with a 79 Service Error.  It will reboot, initialize, sometimes calibrate, and within 30 seconds it will reboot.

I have turned off the wireless, tried to USB direct connect with computer to update firmware, but it won't stay in the ready state long enough before it reboots.  I have cleared all the print queues.

What is the solution

Thank you for sending me a link to the article on Born Tech's site.  Marko Hoven's blog contained the older firmware .exe file which solved my 79 Service Error issue.  Many thanks!!!

Hi @longhorn98,

I'd like to help!

We can perform a factory defaults on the printer to resolve the issue

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
  • In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have the exact same problem with mine.  Printer did update and now just recycles over and over.  I only use this printer on wireless and have seen that others ran a direct cable from their PC to use it again.  So disappointing, nice printer that is now just an anchor.
