HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One
macOS 12.0 Monterey

This issue has occurred with two different 7602 printers - When the ADF cover is kept open, like when you are copying a large book, the printer displays an ADF Jam error message consistently.

Firmware is up to date, and everything else works without an issue, including the ADF.

Hi @jdjester,

I completely understand your frustration, especially when a design choice creates a recurring inconvenience in real-world use, like your wife's classroom copying needs. While the ADF cover sensor is intended as a safety and alignment feature, I agree that the lack of a software override can make frequent tasks like copying with the lid open more challenging than necessary.

Unfortunately, as of now, there isn’t a setting in the printer firmware or HP software to disable or bypass the ADF cover sensor. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and I’ll make sure it’s shared with the appropriate HP product teams. Usability in educational and professional environments is a major focus for future updates and design revisions.

In the meantime, I understand this may not be an ideal solution, but if needed, I'd be happy to recommend alternate models that offer more flexibility around flatbed scanning or copying workflows.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention, and please let us know if there’s anything other issue you need assistance with.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi @jdjester,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand that you're encountering a repeating “ADF Jam” error on your HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One Printer when the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) cover is kept open, such as when scanning or copying a book or thick media. You've also noted that this behavior occurs on two different units and that the firmware is current.

Explanation of the Behavior:

The HP Smart Tank 7602 is designed with built-in ADF sensors to detect proper cover closure before document feeding operations begin. When the ADF cover is open, the printer interprets this as:

  • A potential obstruction in the ADF path
  • Or a jam scenario, since the cover's open state interrupts the sensor logic

This behavior is expected and built in by design, even if the ADF is not actively being used. The device relies on the ADF cover being closed to prevent foreign objects, dust, or lighting conditions from impacting scan quality or feeding mechanics.

Recommended Workarounds:

Option 1: Use the Flatbed Scanner Only

  • Place the book directly on the flatbed glass
  • Ensure the ADF cover is closed completely
  • From the HP Smart app or printer control panel, choose Flatbed as the scan source
  • You may gently hold the book open without fully opening the ADF cover

This will avoid triggering the ADF sensor while still allowing for successful scanning.

Option 2: Use a Spacer or Prop Under the ADF Cover

While not officially supported, some customers use a soft object (foam or cloth pad) beneath the ADF lid to partially support it while keeping the sensor engaged.

Caution: Ensure nothing obstructs the ADF mechanism and that no pressure is placed on the hinges. HP cannot guarantee print quality or hardware safety with modified hardware positions.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks for the update.

Not sure that I would design this feature into the ADF cover without the option to disable it on the software side.

Had I known that this would be an issue, I would have purchased a different printer.

My wife is an elementary school teacher, and has to copy with the cover open on a regular basis. Trying to override the error message each time is going to lead to the ADF cover being broken at some point.

Thank you.
