A small piece of paper tore off my document while scanning through the ADF. I don't see it while clearing the ADF, but still get an error message that the original is jammed in the document feeder. What to do? Thanks!

Thank you so much! I guess disassembly it is. Is that something I could do, or should I contact HP?

The easiest way is to floss the ADF. This is done by taking a heavier piece of paper about 2 inches wide, or light cardboard or stiff mylar and forcing it through the adf path in the normal direction of feeding. This will push out any bits of debris. It is important to only push in the normal direction of travel to avoid damage to paper sensors. It might take a bit of effort to push through. If you have the scanner lid raised as you do it you can see the progress as you push the paper through.

Thank you so much. I have tried your solution and it doesn't work yet:
1. Why would I use heavy paper only 2 inches wide if the paper path is 8.5 inches wide?
2. I have no idea where and how to feed the paper. You can lift the ADF cover once, and then once again. How many times should I lift it? And then where exactly would the paper go? A video would be very helpful. I looked online for HP ADF flossing and found a video, but it's not for my model (HP 8710) so it didn't help. Would be grateful if you can help further. Thanks!

I suggest a narrower piece of paper because a piece of paper the full width is difficult to feed through, makes the job easier.
The way you floss is to open the top cover making sure to release pressure as in step 2 and then feed the stiffer paper through the path. Only in the direction of travel which means as the paper exits you will need to pull it through the rest of the way, repeat for the whole width of the paper path. Anything caught should get pushed out.

So sorry. No paper came out. And I know paper was stuck because there is a small piece missing from my original document - about 2" high to 3/4 inch wide at its widest.
I tried scanning a new piece of paper. It gets stuck in the ADF. I think because there is still something stuck there.
Any ideas what to do next?
Thank you!

If you cannot floss out the paper, then disassembly may be required to get the jam out. Myself I would try flossing a couple more times in hopes of pushing out what is blocking.
