I used to be a member of the ink subscription program and I canceled it. Now my printer will not work. I have tried many ways to put in store-bought HP ink which will not allow my printer to work.

Hi @BillMary,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This situation can occur after cancelling HP Instant Ink. Your printer is likely still using Instant Ink cartridges, which are subscription-linked and stop working once the service is cancelled. Here’s what we recommend trying:

Why Your Printer Won’t Work

  • Instant Ink cartridges are not regular cartridges; they are tied to your subscription.
  • When you cancel, HP disables those cartridges remotely.
  • Even if you insert store-bought cartridges, the printer may still show errors if:
    • The old Instant Ink cartridges are still installed.
    • The printer hasn’t reset from subscription mode.

Steps to Fix It

  1. Remove All Instant Ink Cartridges
    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Take out any cartridges labelled Instant Ink.

  2. Install Genuine HP Retail Cartridges
    • Make sure they match your printer model (e.g., HP 63, 65, 902, etc.).
    • Check authenticity: HP Cartridge Authentication.

  3. Restart the Printer
    • Power off the printer.
    • Unplug for 60 seconds.
    • Plug back in and turn on.

  4. Update Printer Firmware
  5. Reset Printer Settings
    • On the printer: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
    • This clears subscription settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
