@Fred_59, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP's newer firmware updates block third-party ink cartridges with non-HP chips, and if your printer has already updated, you may not be able to bypass the "Non HP Chip Detected" error. Here’s what you can do:

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP or has a chip that supports HP printers.
  • If using third-party ink, check if the supplier provides updated chips compatible with newer HP firmware.

Downgrade Printer Firmware (If Possible)

  • If HP recently updated your firmware, rolling back might help.

To downgrade the firmware on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw, follow these steps:

Prepare the Printer:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Service > LaserJet Update > Manage Updates.
  • Set Allow Downgrade to Yes.
  • Set Check Automatically to Off.
  • Set Allow Updates to Yes.

Download the Firmware:

  • Visit the HP support website and download the desired firmware version for your printer model.

Install the Firmware:

  • Save the firmware file (.exe) to your computer.
  • Double-click the .exe file to launch the firmware update wizard.
  • Select your printer from the drop-down menu and click Send Firmware.
  • Wait for the update to complete. The printer display will show "Programming..." during the update.

Disable Automatic Firmware Updates

  • On the printer, go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update the Printer → Printer Update Options
  • Set it to "Do Not Check" or "Off."

Reset the Printer

If the firmware downgrade is not possible:

  • 1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe until the Setup menu displays. Touch the Setup icon to open the menu.
    2. Scroll to and select the Service menu.
    3. Scroll to and select Restore Defaults, and then touch OK.
    The printer automatically restarts

We strongly recommend you use HP cartridges.
