@mgh346, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 5101 printer is experiencing a network-related issue when connected to your Unifi router. Since the printer works fine over USB, the problem likely stems from network compatibility, DHCP settings, or firmware. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Troubleshooting Steps

Power Cycle Devices

  • Turn off the printer, Unifi router, and any network extenders.
  • Unplug the printer and router from power for 5 minutes.
  • Plug them back in and turn them on.

Update Printer Firmware

If possible, connect via USB and check for firmware updates:

  • Open HP SmartPrinter SettingsAdvanced Settings (EWS).
  • Check for firmware updates under Printer Updates.

Change Wi-Fi Band

  • Unifi routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz.
  • Ensure your Unifi router is set to separate the bands or temporarily disable 5GHz to test.

Assign Static IP Address

In your Unifi Network Controller:

  • Go to Clients and find your printer.
  • Assign a static IP (e.g., 192.168.1.150) under Fixed IP Assignment.
  • Restart the printer.

Change Router Settings

In the Unifi Controller:

  • Go to Network SettingsWi-Fi and try these adjustments:
    • Disable "Auto-Optimize Network."
    • Change WPA security: Set to WPA2-Only (AES) instead of WPA3 or mixed mode.
    • Enable Legacy Support: Some Unifi APs may block older devices.

Test Without Unifi Controller

If your Unifi router is managed via a Cloud Key or Controller, try turning it off and reconnecting the printer directly to the router.

Restore printer network settings

If the issue persists, you can reset the printer:

  • Press and hold the Information button for 5 seconds until the control panel buttons light up.
  • Press and hold the Resume (⚠️) + Cancel () + Wi-Fi button for 10 seconds.
  • Set up Wi-Fi again using HP Smart.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the network connectivity issues with your HP Smart Tank 5101 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
