Problem with faded printout on one side for the Print Cleaning Page, suspecting poor quality toner. Kindly advice on this issuesM635.JPG

Hello,

That’s a good and technically sound initial suspicion — faded print on one side (especially visible on the print cleaning page or internal reports) usually points to a consumable or imaging path issue rather than a software setting.

Let’s go step by step so we can isolate whether it’s the toner cartridge, transfer system, or fuser.

1. Understand the symptom

Since you mention:

  • One side faded consistently (left or right edge)

  • The issue appears even on internal pages like the Cleaning Page or Configuration Page

This confirms that:

  • It’s not driver or print data related, and

  • The issue originates inside the print engine — typically the toner cartridge or one of the print subsystems.

2. Primary suspect — Toner cartridge (most likely)

Your HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M635h uses the following toner types:

  • HP 147A (W1470A) – Standard Yield

  • HP 147X (W1470X) – High Yield

  • HP 147Y (W1470Y) – Extra High Yield

Fading on one side is a classic indicator of:

  • Uneven toner distribution inside the cartridge (especially after long storage or vibration).

  • Worn developer roller or charge roller contamination.

  • Non-genuine or refilled toner with poor density consistency.

Recommended check:

  1. Remove the toner cartridge.

  2. Hold it level and gently rock side-to-side 5–6 times (not up and down).

    • This evenly redistributes toner inside the hopper.

  3. Reinsert it and print the Configuration Page from the printer’s menu.

  4. If the fade improves slightly but persists — the toner cartridge is the source.

If it’s a non-genuine or refilled toner, replace it immediately with a genuine HP 147A/X cartridge.
HP’s internal diagnostics (under Reports → Print Quality Page) can confirm toner uniformity if you want a quantitative test.

3. If a new/genuine toner doesn’t fix it

Then the fade might come from:

  • Transfer roller (beneath the cartridge) being dirty or unevenly charged.

  • Fuser unit (if the fade looks like poor toner adhesion or glossy variation).

  • Laser/scanner lens contamination (rare, but possible if in a dusty environment).

Checks:

  • Print a Halftone Pattern (Service → Diagnostics → PQ Troubleshooting Pages).

    • If the fade pattern repeats in the same position on multiple pages → internal component issue.

  • Inspect the transfer roller (black foam roller under toner):

    • Do not touch it; check visually for toner buildup or shiny patches.

4. Try the built-in “Calibration / Cleaning” cycle

From the printer’s control panel:

  1. Menu → Manage Supplies → Calibrate / Clean Page.

  2. Run the cleaning page twice.

  3. After the process, print another internal page.
If the fade reduces, toner distribution or transfer contamination was the cause.

5. Service-level follow-up

If the faded edge persists after trying a new genuine toner and multiple cleaning cycles, it’s a hardware print path issue:

  • Likely Transfer Roller or Fuser Assembly degradation.
These are customer-replaceable units under HP’s maintenance kit.
The fuser is part of the B5L35-67907 Maintenance Kit (includes rollers and transfer components).

If you confirm it’s not toner, the only permanent fix is to send it for depot repair or maintenance kit replacement — HP Enterprise printers are designed for periodic service at ~200,000–225,000 pages.

Summary

Root Cause Description Recommended Action
Uneven / poor-quality toner One-sided fading, visible on internal pages Replace with new genuine HP 147A/X cartridge
Transfer roller contamination Consistent fade stripe Clean or replace via maintenance kit
Fuser aging Uneven gloss or incomplete fuse Replace maintenance kit (B5L35-67907)
