I’ve been getting the code B8609F1C on the screen of my Office Jet Pro 7740 everyday. The only thing I can do is power down and restart.

I’ve tried restarting and taking power cord out of back and outlet waiting several minutes and replugging back in. I also made sure there was not a software update available.

please help!!  This is so frustrating

Hi @Sjtash

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

I understand how frustrating it is to deal with recurring error codes like B8609F1C on your OfficeJet Pro 7740. I’ll do my best to help you resolve this issue.

The B8609F1C error is a firmware-level error, often indicating a software glitch, corrupted print job, or internal fault that requires a deeper reset or update.

Steps to Troubleshoot and Resolve:

Step 1: Power Reset (Hard Reboot)

You've done this, but here's the official HP method to ensure full power drain:

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.

  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  3. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).

  4. Reconnect to the printer and turn it on if it doesn’t power up automatically.

Step 2: Check and Update Firmware

Even if the printer says it's up to date, we recommend manually checking via HP Smart or the official site:

  • Visit: support.hp.com

  • Choose your OS, then download and install the latest Firmware Update Utility.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to update.

Step 3: (Advanced Reset)

This can resolve deeper firmware issues. Here’s how:

⚠️ Caution: A semi-full reset may reset settings and may require reconfiguring your printer.

  1. Tap the Home button, then navigate to the Settings or Help menu.

  2. Look for Printer MaintenanceRestore Factory Defaults (option names may vary).

  3. If not available via the screen, try this reset method:

    • Turn the printer off.

    • While holding down Back (◀️) and Cancel (), power the printer back on.

    • Continue holding until the reset menu appears.
