I have an HP Envy Photo 7155 All-in-one printer.
The printer displays the following error
"the indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer"
I have HP instant ink subscription and use only HP cartridges. This cartridge was previously working fine
I have gone through the steps with the virtual assistant and read many forums, still without resolution of the problem.
I have tried:
- Resetting the printer (no use)
- Clean the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts (no use)
- Single cartridge mode (works for black but not tricolor issue persists
I have tried installing a brand new, spare HP black ink cartridge I have and it still did not work - leading me to believe it is an issue with the printer itself

Hi @TH0A1FW260,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already. If you're still encountering the "indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer" error on your HP Envy Photo 7155, even with a new cartridge, it could indicate a more persistent hardware issue. Here’s a structured approach to addressing this issue:
**1. Confirm Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure Cartridges are Genuine HP:
- Verify that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Even if you have an HP Instant Ink subscription, occasionally non-genuine cartridges might be provided.
**2. Check Printer Connections
- Inspect the Cartridge Slot:
- Make sure there are no obstructions or debris in the cartridge slot. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently clean the area where the cartridge contacts the printer.
**3. Perform a Printer Self-Test:
- Go to the printer’s control panel, navigate to the settings or tools menu, and print a test page or diagnostic report. This can sometimes provide more insight into the issue.
**4. Check for Firmware Updates:
- Visit the HP Support website and download any available firmware updates for your HP Envy Photo 7155. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve communication issues.
**5. Perform a Printer Hard Reset
- Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and the printer.
- Wait: Leave the printer unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect and Turn On: Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.
**6. Inspect the Ink Cartridges:
- Ensure that each cartridge is properly installed. Remove and reinsert both the black and tricolor cartridges, making sure they are seated correctly.
- Since you've cleaned the contacts before, ensure they're completely dry before reinserting the cartridges. Avoid using excessive moisture.
**7. Check for Printer Error Messages:
- Look for any specific error codes or messages on the printer’s display or in the HP Smart app. These codes can sometimes provide more detailed information about the issue.
**8. Reinstall Printer Software
- Uninstall and Reinstall:
- Uninstall Printer Software:
- Remove the printer software from your computer.
- Reinstall Software:
- Download and install the latest version of the HP software from the HP Support website.
- Uninstall Printer Software:
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
