macOS 12.0 Monterey

Printer is OfficeJet Pro 8610.  When I send, for example, a six page Microsoft word text, as the pages continue to print, ‘blocks of text about 2” long begin to shift to the left.  By the time the print job finishes, the text is printing past the right side of the paper….

Any suggestions very appreciated.  Perhaps it has reached its ‘end of life?’

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi @SlevenNod,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand this issue seems to be related to a misalignment problem, potentially caused by a software, driver, or hardware issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

1. Check and Update Printer Drivers

Since you're using macOS 12.0 Monterey, ensure that your printer drivers are up to date.

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and select your printer.
  • Click Remove (-) and then re-add the printer using the Add (+) button.
  • If available, download the latest HP drivers from HP’s official website.

2. Reset Printing System

Sometimes, resetting the printing system can resolve software glitches.

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control + Click) anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add the printer and try printing again.

3. Check Word Document Formatting

  • If using Microsoft Word, ensure that there are no hidden formatting issues:
    • Go to File > Print and check the print preview.
    • Try saving the document as a PDF and print from Preview instead of Word.
    • If the issue persists, try printing a different document or a test page to see if the problem is specific to one file.

4. Run Printer Alignment and Calibration

Misalignment issues can sometimes be fixed by calibrating the printer.

  • Open HP Utility (found in Applications > HP folder).
  • Select Align Printhead and follow the instructions.
  • Run a Print Quality Diagnostic Page to check for errors.

5. Print from a Different Application

Try printing from:

  • Apple Preview (open your Word file as a PDF and print).
  • Google Docs (upload the file and print from a browser).
  • Pages (Apple's word processor).

If the issue only happens in Microsoft Word, the problem may be Word's print settings.

6. Perform a Hard Reset on Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power for about 2 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and restart.
  • Test printing again.

7. Check for Paper Path Obstructions

  • Open the printer and check for any paper debris or roller issues.
  • Clean the rollers if they appear worn or dirty.

8. Try a Different Connection

If using WiFi, try USB or Ethernet instead to rule out connectivity issues.

Would you like help finding a replacement printer if needed? 😊

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
