Hi @ValerieG21

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the issue. I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this—seeing a blue screen error like B82F65EC on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 can be unsettling, especially when it interrupts your workflow and forces a manual restart just to regain control.

Possible causes

Some likely root causes include:

A firmware or software crash (internal firmware hung or corrupt)

Memory corruption or internal storage error

An issue with one of the internal subsystems (print engine, carriage, sensor, or interface board)

A faulty ink cartridge or cartridge communication issue

Power / voltage instability or a failing power supply

Loose internal connectors, worn flex cables, or flex circuit damage

Because the printer recovers when you power off & on, it suggests a transient state or crash rather than a permanently broken part — though it might be on the edge of failure.

Steps to Resolve Error Code B82F65EC

1. Update the Printer Firmware

Even if your printer seems up to date, manually reinstalling the latest firmware can help:

2. Perform a Power Reset

This deeper reset clears internal memory and restores factory defaults:

  • Power off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the Power button while reconnecting the power cord.
  • Continue holding for 15 seconds, then release.

This reset may take a few minutes and will clear saved settings, so be prepared to reconfigure Wi-Fi and preferences.

3. Disable Sleep Mode

To prevent the printer from entering idle states that trigger the error:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to SettingsPreferencesSleep Mode.
  • Set sleep timer to Never or a longer duration (e.g., 60 minutes).

4. Use HP Smart Diagnostic Tools

HP Smart may not flag this error directly, but it can help identify underlying issues:

  • Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.
  • Add your printer and run Printer Status and Advanced Settings.
  • Check for any hidden alerts or blocked jobs.

You’ve done everything right by seeking a fix—let’s make sure your printer stays responsive and reliable.
