I noticed the message B860DF1C on my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 screen twice. When I see it, I just need to push the power button and it would restart to normal. But as a long time Windows user, blue screen usually doesn't mean good. And I couldn't found what that code mean. Does anyone know and if I need to be concern?

Thank you in advance!

Hi @Garfield4

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The blue screen message “B860DF1C” on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is a firmware-level error. While it may look alarming, it typically signals a temporary software glitch—not a hardware failure. If restarting resolves it, there's no immediate cause for concern, but it’s worth taking steps to prevent recurrence.

What This Error Means

The code B860DF1C isn’t publicly documented by HP, but similar codes on the OfficeJet Pro 7740 often point to:

  • Corrupted print jobs
  • Firmware instability
  • Memory overflow or internal communication fault

Since your printer resumes normal operation after a restart, it’s likely a transient issue rather than a critical fault.

Steps to Minimize Recurrence

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the rear and from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Reconnect to the printer and power it on.

2. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can trigger blue screen errors:

3. Clear Print Queue Regularly

  • Avoid sending large or complex PDF/image jobs without previewing.
  • Clear stuck jobs from System Settings > Printers & Scanners on your Mac.

4. Avoid Sleep/Wake Print Interruptions

  • If the printer is idle for long periods, wake it fully before sending a job.
  • Sudden wake-print commands can sometimes trigger firmware hiccups.

If the error becomes frequent or prevents printing, I can guide you through a semi-full reset or deeper diagnostics. For now, your printer’s ability to recover with a restart is a good sign.

Hi,

I think I may found out why the blue screen appeared, and just want to share.

There is a Mac computer in my network, and it is using Image Capture to scan documents from the HP printer. And it seems like if the Image Capture application is not closed, it would crash the printer. This is my observation so far.

Hope this will help someone else. And thank you so much for @Hawks_Eye suggestion, I did tried that!

Thanks!
