Following a the set up instructions & made it all the way to printing the alignment page. That’s where it’s stuck, circle spinning in the middle of the screen & says printing the alignment page. Will stay that way for hours & never print a thing. I have unplugged it, turned it off multiple times with no success. Same thing every time it’s powered back on. Any suggestions ?

Hi @TigerTown03,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your brand new HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is stuck on the alignment page during the setup process, with a spinning circle and no progress, try these steps to resolve the issue:

1. Cancel the Print Job:

  • On the Printer: Press the "Cancel" button on the printer (usually marked with an "X" or "Stop" icon). This should attempt to stop the alignment page from being printed.
  • From the Printer's Control Panel:
    • Navigate to Setup > Tools > Cancel Current Job.
  • On Your Computer:
    • Open the Print Queue on your computer by going to Devices and Printers (or Printers & Scanners on Windows 11/10) > Right-click on your HP printer > See what's printing.
    • Right-click on the alignment job and select Cancel.

2. Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn Off the Printer: Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for 30 Seconds: Leave the printer unplugged for 30 seconds to clear any memory issues.
  • Plug the Printer Back In: Reconnect the printer and turn it on. Check if it resumes the setup process.

3. Check for Paper Jams or Blockages:

  • Open the printer’s front panel and check for any paper jams or misfeeds that could be causing the alignment page to get stuck.
  • Clear any paper debris or check that the paper is loaded properly in the tray.

4. Reset the Printer:

  • Restore Factory Defaults:
    • From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
    • This will reset the printer to its original settings, and you can try the alignment process again.

5. Run Alignment Manually:

  • After power cycling the printer, you can manually initiate the alignment process again:
    • Go to the printer’s Setup Menu > Tools > Align Printer.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @TigerTown03,

Please find the remaining steps below.

6. Check for Firmware Update:

  • Sometimes, firmware bugs can cause setup issues. Ensure the printer has the latest firmware:
    • Visit the HP Support page for your printer model.
    • Download and install any available firmware updates.

7. Use HP Smart App:

  • If the setup process is still stuck, try completing the printer setup using the HP Smart App on your phone or computer. This app may help guide the process and bypass the issue.

8. Hard Reset (Optional):

  • If none of the above steps work, you can perform a hard reset:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    • Hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
    • Release the button, plug the printer back in, and turn it on again.

By following these steps, your printer should either complete or restart the alignment process. Let me know if you encounter any issues or need further assistance!

Note: once the setup is complete, try using HP regular cartridges.

Keep me posted for further assistance
