ENVY 4504
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello

I am using a non -HP cartridge and it doesn't work. ( the display reads 'protected cartridge' or the Dutch equivalent anyway )

Now, I know about disabling  the cartridge protection mode, but that doesn't seem to help.

An HP cartridge presents no problem, but a cartridge from a reputable firm shouldn't be a problem either, right ?

How do I solve this problem ?

Printer: Envy 4504.

Regards

Peter.

Once a cartridge is protected, it is protected to that one printer only.  You can never reverse that cartridge.   Suggest you return that cartridge as I suspect it may have been used in another printer.
