Hi @SILKWEED,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ink cartridge is not communicating with your printer, try these troubleshooting steps.

Check for Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure you're using the correct cartridge for your printer model.
  • If you have Instant Ink cartridges, make sure your subscription is active.

Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer cover and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Check for any protective tape and remove it if present.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly and close the cover.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let them dry for a few minutes before reinserting.

Restart the Printer

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Wait for the printer to recognize the cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to HP’s support website and update your printer’s firmware.
  • Sometimes, outdated firmware causes communication errors.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cable from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn the printer on.

Try a New Cartridge

  • If possible, replace the cartridge with a new HP original ink cartridge.
  • If the printer recognizes the new cartridge, the previous one may be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
