I am trying to copy a two-sided document, I select the 1-2 option for 2 sided printing. I put the first page on the scanner, and it scans.  What's supposed to happen now is that my printer asks for the second page -- it does not. It pauses mid-printing as if it was going to suck the paper back up, but it does not give me time to put a 2nd page on the scanner.  It just goes ahead and prints a blank page for the other side.

Hi,

the printer supports 2-sided printing, it does not support two sided copying of an original.

You may put multiple 1-sided pages on the feeder, then select 1 Sides > 2 Sided in the settings and copy to get the output printed on both sides.

If your original is printed on both sides, select 1 Sides > 2 sided and put the original on the Flatbed Glass, then manually reload the other side on the Flatbed when prompt to load the next page.

As I explained, my problem is that the printer does not ask me to put in a second page.  It pauses as if it's going to (pauses the way it does when I print  something that is double-sided), but it does not ask for a second page.

And are you putting the original on the Flatbed Glass or on the top Document Feeder?

As I explained, it cannot be done from the top ADF, but only by putting the original on the Flatbed Glass, then you will have the option to manually flip the page.

By using the feeder, the printer expects multiple 1-sided originals, you will not be offered with any option to replace the original there.
