Can't get the color cartridges to work

HP Recommended
Photosmart 6520
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

The color shows up in Print Preview but then it doesn't print out. All the color cartridges are in the printer, but it shows them empty with a warning sign on all of them. They can't all be totally empty at the same time, with no warning coming. I think they are not activated somehow. I do have the button pushed for color printing.

Also when I try to use max dpi, it won't take it because it says there is a conflict. When I let it resolve the conflict, it always turns the max dpi off. How do I get it so it will be on?

Hi! @MartinV42, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues printing in color from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you installed full feature printer software on your PC?

Please provide the operating system you are running on your PC to assist you better.

Have you tried printing from a different application?

Try printing a test page from your printer and check if the printer is printing all the colors.

If it is not printing try the steps recommended below.

Click Print,
Select Printer properties,
Select Paper/Quality tab,
Click Advanced,
Select Print Grayscale Off
Click Apply then OK

In search type devices and printer.

Open devices and printer

Right-click on your printer and select printing preferences.

Select paper/quality tab.
Select color from the list.
Click Apply then OK

If the test page prints all the colors uninstall the printer software from root level and install the latest drivers.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Install the printer full feature printer software using this link.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot print quality issues with your printer.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps it is a hardware issue with the ink cartridges or the printer.
