I cannot print to the officejet 7740 from home computer, but I can from work computer when VPN is off. The HP Smart App says it is connected and I can print to my other printer from home computer. Both computers and both printers are on ethernet connection for internet. This is very frustrating. Went through virtual assistant in the HP Smart App, but it is useless. Someone please help

Hi @Johnwthomas66 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing network-related issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. Here are several steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

1. Check Printer and Network Configuration

  • Ensure Printer is Online: Verify that the printer is powered on and properly connected to the network. Check the printer's display for any error messages.
  • Network Configuration: Make sure that your home computer, work computer, and printers are all on the same network. If they are on different subnets, it might cause connectivity issues.

2. Verify IP Address and Connectivity

  • IP Address: Check the printer’s IP address via the printer’s control panel. Note down this IP address.
  • Ping Test: On your home computer, open Command Prompt and type ping [printer's IP address] to check if your computer can communicate with the printer.

3. Update Printer Drivers

  • Download and Install Latest Drivers: Go to the HP Support Website and download the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. Install these drivers on your home computer.

4. Reinstall Printer on Home Computer

  • Remove Printer: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select your OfficeJet Pro 7740, and click Remove device.
  • Re-add Printer: Click Add a printer or scanner and let Windows search for your printer. Select it and follow the prompts to reinstall.

5. Firewall and Antivirus Settings

  • Check Firewall: Ensure that your firewall isn’t blocking the printer. You might need to add an exception for the printer’s IP address or disable the firewall temporarily for testing.
  • Antivirus Software: Temporarily disable your antivirus software to see if it’s causing the issue.

6. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download Tool: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can help diagnose and fix common printing issues.

7. Check Printer Sharing Settings

  • Enable Printer Sharing: If you’re trying to print over a network, ensure that printer sharing is enabled on the computer where the printer is installed.

8. Verify Printer Port and Protocol Settings

  • Standard TCP/IP Port: Make sure the printer is using a Standard TCP/IP port. Go to Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, select Printer properties, and check the Ports tab.
  • WSD Port: If it’s using a WSD port, try changing it to a Standard TCP/IP port.

9. Restart Network Devices

  • Restart Devices: Restart your router, modem, home computer, and the printer. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

10. Advanced Network Configuration

  • Static IP Address: Assign a static IP address to the printer to avoid IP conflicts.
  • Network Isolation: Ensure that your home network isn’t isolated (some routers have settings that prevent devices from communicating with each other).

I hope this helps.
