Carriage jam

Product: Officejet Pro 8600

Does anyone have experience with this printer displaying a carriage jam error.  "print carriage cannot move"?  I've done all the troubleshooting steps on HP and there is nothing jamming it in the first place, but the steps to clear the message don't work.  The nearest repair shop for me is 100 miles away and a local computer repair shop told me HPs have those errors a lot and you can't fix them and it would be better to just replace the printer.  I still like this printer even though I have a Officejet 8720.  I prefer this one but just wondering if it could be repaired or if I should just toss it?  thanks
