Just got a paper jam in this printer under the ink cartridge. Instruction state to remove the cartridge and lift the metal plate to remove the paper. Problem: ink cartridge is stuck on the left side with a white plastic tab near the status chips and cannot be removed. Only error message is 'Paper Jam'. Since I can't remove the cartridge, I can't remove the paper jam.

Hi @oldford,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with a paper jam when the ink cartridge is stuck can be frustrating, but let's see if we can tackle this issue step by step. Here are a few suggestions to help you safely remove the stuck cartridge and then the jammed paper in your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw printer:

Turn Off the Printer: Before attempting to fix any jams, always turn off your printer and unplug it. This is important for safety reasons and to avoid damaging the printer.

Manual Release Tab: Check if there is a manual release tab near the stuck cartridge. Some printers have a hidden lever or button that can be pressed or moved to release a stuck cartridge. This tab or lever is often located close to the cartridge in question.

Gentle Movement: Try gently pushing the cartridge inwards (towards the right side if it's stuck on the left) and then pulling it outwards. Do not apply excessive force. Sometimes, slightly moving the cartridge back and forth can help release it if it's caught on something.

Inspect for Obstructions: With a flashlight, inspect the area around the stuck cartridge for any visible obstructions. Sometimes, a small piece of paper, packing material, or debris can prevent the cartridge from moving freely.

Use the Printer's Display Panel: Some HP printers offer guidance on clearing paper jams and resolving cartridge issues directly on the display panel. Navigate through the menu to see if there are any troubleshooting guides or specific instructions for dealing with a stuck cartridge.

Consult the User Manual: If you haven't already, consult the user manual for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw. There might be specific instructions or diagrams showing how to deal with stuck cartridges and paper jams for your model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

You are going to have to find a way to jimmy the cartridge out. Check YouTube to see if another user has had the same problem and posted a video.
