Hi @Damaris_Moulton,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is showing a "cartridge malfunction" error and not communicating with the cartridges, here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Basic Checks
Turn Off and Restart:
- Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve temporary issues.
Check Cartridges:
- Make sure the cartridges are properly installed. Remove and reinstall them to ensure they are seated correctly.
2. Inspect and Clean Cartridges
Remove and Check Cartridges:
- Open the cartridge access door and gently remove the cartridges.
- Check for any protective tape or packaging that might still be on the cartridges.
Clean Contacts:
- Using a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab, gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and inside the cartridge carriage. Be careful not to touch the nozzles.
Reinstall Cartridges:
- Reinstall the cartridges firmly into their slots. Ensure they are properly aligned and seated.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
- Update Firmware:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for the latest firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.
- Follow the instructions to download and install any available updates.
4. Perform Printer Self-Test and Diagnostics
Print a Self-Test Page:
- Navigate to the printer's control panel menu and select Tools > Print Quality Report or Self-Test Page. This helps check if the printer is communicating with the cartridges.
Run Printer Diagnostics:
- Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools to check for cartridge issues. This can often be found under Setup or Maintenance in the printer menu.
5. Check for Software Issues
Update Printer Software:
- Ensure that the HP Smart app or HP Printer Software installed on your computer is up-to-date.
Reinstall Printer Software:
- Uninstall and then reinstall the printer software on your computer. This can resolve any software-related issues affecting cartridge communication.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
